No TTS on your provider? Leave it — the free browser voice is the fallback. (Anthropic isn't OpenAI-compatible and has no TTS.)

Backup provider (optional)

Text only (summary / translation / ask): used when your main provider is out of credits (402), rate-limited (429), or its key is rejected (401). Not used for the voice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hearcast free?

Yes. Reading articles and the built-in browser voice are free and need no account or API key. Add your own OpenAI-compatible key only if you want AI summaries, translation, or natural cloud voices.

Do I need an account?

No sign-up. Paste a link or some text and press play.

What can I listen to?

Web articles and blog posts (via a link), PDFs you drop on the page, and any text you paste. Hearcast extracts the content and reads it aloud while keeping the full text on screen.

Is my data private?

Your API key stays in your browser and never touches the server. Articles you read are not stored on a server.

Can I self-host Hearcast?

Yes. Hearcast is source-available and ships with a Dockerfile. Self-hosting runs in bring-your-own-key mode.
